So, I'm sure everyone agrees with me that Valentine's Day is super tacky. And thinking of people confessing their love, proposing or giving heart-shaped boxes of crappy chocolates on this day makes me cringe. Japan has taken this holiday to a new level of ridiculousness by making it TWO days. On February 14th women give men chocolates. Then on March 14th (aka White Day) men give women presents (According to Elspeth's homestay father, this present should cost approximately 4 times what the woman's chocolate cost). Did you get all that? Also, children don't seem to exchange cards or chocolate....and high school girls feel the need to bake their friends gifts. Weird? Oh yes. That is all.

I really can't believe the formality of the celebrations in Japan -- though i guess if i take into account everything else i've learned vicariously about Japan... yup it kinda fits! We "celebrated" at my place by consuming massive amounts of peppermint chocolate fudge crackle ice cream (thank you, Presidents'Choice!), watching the sequel to Auberge Espanole, then trying to play squash in the hallway/kitchen. It very much felt like a return to the hi-larity of 4th year, and except all it was missing was you & Steph :(
